Tuesday, October 26, 2004, the President of the National Regulatory Authority for Communications, Ion Smeeianu, delivered a speech during the ceremony of launching EV-DO technology in Romania.
Romania is the first country in the region that implemented the CDMA technology, by observing the principle of technological neutrality. The secondary legislation issued by ANRC provided for the use of various technologies on the Romanian market of electronic communications, such as twisted metallic pairs, coaxial cable, optical fiber, DECT, CDMA, ensuring access to complex services such as ISDN, NGN, IP or 3G.
As 450 MHz broadband CDMA 2000 technology was implemented, EV-DO technology comes as a continuation and ensures data transfer at high rates of maximum 2,4 Mbps. EV-DO is a 3G standard for fixed, portable and mobile applications providing access to broadband wireless services.
In the European Union, by the end of the current year more than 40 3G networks are expected to fulfil the demand for high rate data transmissions services. By the beginning of 2004 more than 500,000 users of such services were reported in 5 EU member states.
“Romania is ready to enter a new era of mobile communications, since the competition on this market is a challenge for the operators to do their best in order to become more and more competitive”, the ANRC President declared on this occasion.
