“Competition is viable and effective on the electronic communications market,” the President of the National Regulatory Authority for Communications, Mr. Dan Cristian Georgescu, declared Wednesday, October 18 2005, in the opening session of the “International Broadband Communications Conference”. On this occasion, the ANRC President highlighted the main developments of the electronic communications market in 2005.
The fixed telephony market registered the most important growth – the number of subscribers in the alternative providers’ own network rose by approx. 300% in the first half of 2005, i.e. the alternative providers’ market share reached 3.86% (considering the subscribers in their own networks). The new entrants on the fixed telephony market reported 185,323 subscribers, among which 165,349 – in their own network. The overall number of subscribers to fixed telephone services had reached 4,350,807 by the end of June.
At the end of June 2005, 63 alternative providers operated on the electronic communications market, 24 of which offered service packages to business and residential users through their own networks. Furthermore, in June 2005, 42 of the alternative providers on the market offered telephone services, through other providers’ network, to 19,974 subscribers.
The number of companies providing fix – mobile services increased from 17, at the end of 2004, to 24 at the middle of 2005.
On the same date, the mobile operators reported 11,379,214 subscribers – 10% more than end-2004. The penetration rate on this segment reached 52.50%.
On June 30, 688 providers offered Internet access services, that is, their number increased by 33% as compared to the number of active providers of Internet access services in 2004. In the first half of 2005, the number of dedicated Internet access connections witnessed significant growth (by 77.3%) as compared to end-2004, amounting to 278,083 dedicated connections.
