Geneva – 160 years after the establishment of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and 80 years since the creation of the United Nations (UN), Romania strengthens its international profile in the field of information and communication technologies, with our country's representative being elected as Chair of the ITU Council for 2025. This has been confirmed today at the opening session of the annual meeting. The ITU Council meeting takes place from 17 to 27 June 2025 in Geneva, under the aegis of the ITU General Secretariat.
By exercising this mandate, Romania reaffirms its commitment to the principles of international cooperation in support of technological progress, global connectivity and inclusive digital development. Moreover, chairing the ITU 2025 Council positions Romania as a responsible partner within the international community, one who facilitates and promotes an environment conducive to dialogue, consensus and multilateral collaboration within this oldest specialized agency of the United Nations.
Romania within the International Telecommunication Union
Romania has a constant and active presence in ITU structures, participating in Plenipotentiary Conferences, Council sessions and World Conferences, as well as in working groups, seminars, study groups and other working formats of the three sectors of the Union – Radiocommunication, Standardization and Development. Between 2018 and 2024, Romania coordinated common European positions and proposals at the Council and the World Conferences of the Union, as a co-chair of CEPT – the regional telecommunications organization for Europe recognized at the ITU.
Chairing the ITU Council strengthens Romania's image as a proactive and professional member state, an image which was built over time, during the country’s eight consecutive terms in this forum. The Council brings together representatives of the Council's 48 member states, elected from all regions of the world, being the forum responsible for overseeing the Union's activities in the period between the Plenipotentiary Conferences, preparing reports on ITU's strategic and political planning, coordinating work programmes and approving the Union's budget and finances.
About the International Telecommunication Union
Founded in 1865, the International Telecommunication Union currently brings together 194 member states and more than 1,000 partner organisations. It is the United Nations' specialised agency for digital technologies, playing a key role in harmonising the use of radio spectrum, satellite resources, and of global telecommunications infrastructures and standards. Through initiatives such as Connect 2030, ITU aims to ensure digital inclusion, innovation and universal access to digital services. Romania became a member of the organization in 1866, just one year after the establishment of the Union. With a 160-year history, ITU remains a pillar of innovation and collaboration, continuing to shape a future where technology benefits everyone.
