In 2026, Romania marks 160 years of membership in the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) — an anniversary that highlights our country’s long‑standing tradition and firm commitment to the development of the telecommunications sector.
ANCOM represents Romania within the ITU as part of the national administration, providing constant support to the Union in fulfilling its mandate. Through active involvement in the ITU’s working processes, the Authority contributes to the development of international policies, standards and regulations, thereby supporting the advancement of a modern, secure and competitive telecommunications sector.
Over the years, ANCOM specialists have earned the trust of ITU Member States, being appointed to key roles within Plenipotentiary Conferences, World Conferences and ITU Study Groups. This recognition was also reflected in Romania’s being selected as host country for the ITU Plenipotentiary Conference, one of the most prestigious ICT events worldwide. PP‑22, held in Bucharest between 26 September and 14 October 2022, brought together more than 3,000 delegates from over 180 countries and was regarded as one of the most successful Plenipotentiary Conferences in the ITU’s modern history—both in terms of organization and the quality of debates. Romania played a central role in fostering a constructive and cooperative environment, including by serving as the Designated Chair of the Conference.
Moreover, Romania’s tenure as Chair of the ITU Council in 2025 further strengthened our country’s role as a facilitator of dialogue and consensus within the Union.
The professionalism, technical expertise and dedication of ANCOM representatives have consistently earned international recognition, reinforcing Romania’s status as a responsible and trusted member of both the global community and the ITU. This reputation also provides a solid foundation for Romania’s new candidacy for a mandate in the ITU Council at PP‑26, which will take place in Doha between 9 and 27 November 2026.
This anniversary is not only a moment of reflection, but also an opportunity to look with confidence towards a future in which innovation, connectivity and international cooperation remain the pillars of digital progress.
