Today, October 30, 2008, the president of the National Authority for Communications, Liviu Nistoran, has announced, during a press conference, the porting of the first telephone number in Romania.

„I am pleased to announce you that yesterday, October 29, 2008, at 16.34 hours, the first telephone number was successfully ported into a mobile telephone network. I understand that the person who was the first to change his (her) provider, by porting his (her) number, is very satisfied by his (her) choice and by the easiness and quickness with which the porting process was performed. I hope that all the users who choose to make use of this facility will be as satisfied as the person that first ported his (her) number”, Liviu Nistoran declared.

Until today, October 30, 2008, 2,841 porting requests were registered by the database, out of which 2,769 for mobile telephony and 72 for fixed telephony. Since October 21, the day when number portability was implemented in Romania, the number of porting requests has doubled from one day to another.

During this morning, October 30, 14 mobile telephony numbers have been successfully ported to different mobile telephony networks. Some of these numbers have already been activated and are now operational in the acceptor provider’s network, while others are under the activation procedure.

Since the launch of www.portabilitate.ro, this website that provides information on the porting process registers, on the average, 2000 users a day, with a record of 2700 users on October 28.

”The success of number portability should not be measured by the number of ported numbers; it should be assessed based on the operator’s diligence to keep their customers, on their effort to devise more advantageous offers and to provide better quality services, at lower tariffs. We wish that number portability contribute to enhanced competition in the market, and that the number of ported numbers reflect the users’ attraction towards better, lower-priced offers, rather than their discontent with a certain provider,” Liviu Nistoran highlighted.
