On Monday, the 12th of May 2003, The President of the National Regulatory Authority for Communications (ANRC), Ion Smeeianu, took part in the opening of the round table on the theme: The Romanian Telecommunications Market – Opportunities and Challenges, dedicated to the communications industry, especially to the mobile and fixed telephony companies, as well as for the representatives of the authorities within the sector.

During his speech at the opening of the event, the President of ANRC reaffirmed the role of the regulatory body in the development of the Romanian electronic communications market. His statements were supported with concrete examples regarding the activity of the institution – especially the adoption of new procedures for general authorization and for the granting of licenses for the use of numbering resources – and the efficiency and flexibility of the new market entrance conditions were proved by the number of 1064 companies authorized so far to provide electronic communications networks and services.

In his presentation of the telecommunications market development opportunities, the President of ANRC also focused on the new generation of specialists, whose qualities are not fully valued in the country.

In order to familiarize the young specialists with the concrete situation in the communications sector and to stimulate them to get more involved in its development, ANRC initiated a students’ practice programme involving different divisions of the institution. Starting May 12, 2003, students from various faculties – technical, economic, legal profiles – will assist the regulatory authority specialists, taking note of the working method and getting an update on the new regulatory framework for communications.

“The Romanian technical school is a nursery of young talents in the communications sector. To encourage the companies to rapidly assimilate them, ANRC decided to initiate the practice programme within the institution, which begins this week. The programme is not designed only for the graduates from faculties with technical profile, but also for those from economic and legal faculties. I estimate that until the end of this year at least 20 students will have done practice in the various ANRC divisions and I have the conviction that in the following years these professional young persons will become well informed partners in the ANRC cooperation with the communications industry”, declared Ion Smeeianu.
