The Net Neutrality principle is subject to intense debates at European and global level. This principle, according to which the Internet access networks should treat equally and without discrimination every type of content, all sites, platforms and applications available, faces a number of counterarguments in the matter of the need to manage the traffic in order to ensure the network efficiency and sustainability.
The National Authority for Management and Regulation in Communications (ANCOM) and the Association for Technology and Internet (ApTI) wish to discuss about the challenges and issues pertaining to net neutrality with all the interested entities and therefore will organise a public debate under the heading Net Neutrality and the Quest for Sustainable Internet, on 5 June 2012, at Athénée Palace Hilton Hotel in Bucharest.
The public debate jointly organised by ANCOM and ApTI, aiming to bring together policy makers, regulators, senior executives of the communications companies, consumer and civil rights organisations from Romania and beyond, will seek to map the situation of the Net Neutrality debate in Europe and take it further in the direction of consensus regarding the best ways of reaching the common desiderate: ensuring a free, accessible and sustainable Internet. The emphasis will be on the diversity of opinions and the exchange of views on topics such as consumer rights or traffic management practices and regulations, ultimately aiming to discern what would be the best role assigned to each of the different actors – national regulatory authorities, electronic communications service providers, content providers and end-users.
The agenda of the event, as well as the registration form are available on the ANCOM website, at the Events section. Attendance is free.
The latest statistical data report published by ANCOM shows that the Internet access is continuously growing in Romania, as the number of fixed broadband access connections amounted to 3.26 million and the number of active mobile broadband Internet access connections reached 4.23 million at end-2011.
